ASSET*AmeriCorps

Easter Seals Central Texas (ESCT) believes that people with disabilities should have the opportunity to participate fully and equally in every aspect of our society. This philosophy has lead ESCT to collaborate with other programs and initiatives that empower people with disabilities to do just that. A few of those successful collaborations are with the Corporation for National and Community Service Texas State Office, OneStar Foundation, and the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities to support projects with AmeriCorps resources.

What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is an opportunity to help others by addressing critical needs in the community through direct service. Each year, AmeriCorps offers 75,000 opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups. It’s a chance to make a difference in your life and in the lives of those around you. AmeriCorps members give a year or two of service to their country, and, in return gain valuable professional experience and earn money for college. This mutually beneficial relationship is win-win for everyone involved.

What is ASSET*AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps resources help support an ESCT initiative called the ASSET*AmeriCorps program, which stands for Active Service Solutions for Economic Transition. ASSET*AmeriCorps Members, called Navigators, provide direct services and develop local capacity to address the financial education, asset development, assistive technology and housing needs of Texans with disabilities. Navigators serve at ESCT-CHS and at local partner organizations around Texas, expanding their capacity to achieve their mission and building community involvement and support.

ASSET assists individuals with disabilities and their families who face many barriers to living independently in the community, including lack of affordable, accessible and integrated housing, difficulty obtaining assistive technologies and limited access to financial education and services.

In doing so, ASSET*AmeriCorps program supports the freedom of choice for people with disabilities and will provide an important step toward reducing poverty and building economic independence and self-sufficiency.

Past Collaborations

Access Housing VISTA/AccessTexasHousing.org

 - Communities Included: Dallas, Fort Worth, Corpus Christi,

   San Antonio, Houston, Austin, Waco/Belton

 - If you are interested in (1) searching for accessible apartments in your

community (2) adding your apartment complex to the database (3)

updating accessibility information (4) volunteering to conduct

accessibility surveys in your community, please check out

  www.AccessTexasHousing.org.

-The Access Texas Housing database is now sustained through the
